08a256 Rhodesia. 1915-16, military. 9 postcards from Sgt. EP Lock, #580, Second Rhodesia Regiment, to his wife. Commencing with card written on board ship bound for Mombassa, posted in Beira, through 31 OC 1916 at Dar Es Salaam. In between, FPO 51, 15 JY 15; FPO 315, 21 AU 15; FPO 25, 2OC15; Simonstown 11 JY 16 (in hospital, wounded in action); Durban, 16 JY 16 (en route to rejoin the regiment); FPO 307 4 OC 16; FPO 343, 22 OC 16. On album pages with some historical detail The wartime exploits of the 2nd Rhodesia Regiment are uncommonly well documented. (See, e.g., http://books.google.com/books?id=j7I8AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA3&lpg=PA3&dq=%22Second+Rhodesia+Regiment%22&source=web&ots=HA1d5ckkTN&sig=6-RYHiswtPcrl85uPxG1t8h5UyY&hl=en; http://www.amazon.ca/2nd-Rhodesia-Regiment-East-Africa/dp/1845743296; http://books.google.com/books?id=hd_HS2aXvs4C&pg=RA3-PA257&lpg=RA3-PA257&dq=%222nd+rhodesia+regiment%22&source=web&ots=6Ha7BEFogi&sig=jmec4qV-rOrenlftfuLmKoydFKE&hl=en; http://www.rhodesia.nl/gann1.htm .) While numbers vary, there is no question that between combat and disease, this unit was more than decimated. The write-up accompanying the cards indicated that of the 36 officers and 1002 men enlisted with the regiment, only 11 officers and 259 men returned to Rhodesia at the end of the campaign. Sgt. Lock was one of those lucky few. (More) (More) The lot, $2000
