The blacked-out cornercard refers to a social organization at Fort Dix, NJ. The very-low 1000 series APOs were assigned as temporary transit numbers in January 1942, and they are quite scarce. APO 1002 was mis-assigned to the Canal Zone on 2 January and was reassigned to Iceland on 3 January. $335

Japanese Navy airmail reply field postcard, used as stationery by the US sender, enclosed in (faulty) cover, both bearing the May 9 LA postmark relating to a parcel request. Nice example of a "by the numbers" message – i.e., specific message texts were numbered so that all the company had to transmit was sender & address information and the message number, which was turned into words on receipt. $15

06a341 US. 1942 (23 Feb), USS San Francisco return address on airmail cover (Prexy franking). Enclosed letter accurately reports the downing of 16 Japanese planes but does not report that their discovery of the TF of which she was a part aborted the US attack on Rabaul. $15

06a342 US. 1945 (3 August), military; naval. USS Shelikoff return address on airmail cover (Transport franking). She was a seaplane tender, at this date anchored off Kerama Retta, a small island in the Ryukyus about 15 miles from Okinawa. $35

Brief note inside datelined Czechoslovakia 7 May: "'Allis kaput for the 3rd Reich' thank God. I'm so excited I can't hardly write." Light toning on cover. $35

One suspects that the sender's presence was in connection with the negotiations that led to the Linggadjati Agreement under which the Dutch were to have recognized an autonomous United States of Indonesia.
